Drinking and Clubbing in Sin City!

Just about all of the discos and nightspots in the major Las Vegas casino resorts are gay-friendly with stunning light shows and amazing sound systems. You will see a lot of other Friends of Dorothy in the hetero clubs each night.

Despite the city’s size, the gay scene in Las Vegas is fairly small and local, and, with a few exceptions, it’s not known for its friendliness. Because of the city’s transient nature, crowds at bars can vary a lot from night to night and season to season; this is one reason the crowds don’t always seem especially warm and friendly. But the variety keeps things interesting. Another bit of good news is that the bars are easy to find and cluster around two major areas, with about half the nightspots on Paradise Road between Hanson and Tropicana and many of the rest in Commercial Center.

Also, you should feel perfectly at ease asking any waiter, waitress, bell person, concierge, or taxi driver for a list and map of gay bars. They’ll happily direct you without batting an eyelash. Most bars in Las Vegas start and run late, generally getting busy after midnight.

In the neighborhood affectionately known as the Fruit Loop, Freezone,is one of the most popular all-around gay bars in town, and it’s one of the few places that pulls in a mix of lesbians and gay guys, especially the under-30s set. By Vegas standards, it’s a friendly place, and it has some nice amenities, including a decent restaurant, a pool hall, and great drink specials (okay, every LV gay club has great drink specials, but they’re especially impressive here). Tuesday is specifically geared toward lesbians, and Thursdays toward guys. Otherwise, it’s very mixed.

Badlands Saloon with a Latin flair, hosts frequent Naked Papi Parties, muy caliente, with top DJs and special shows. Charlie’s is a popular country & western local hangout, they host a variety of dance classes and hoedowns plus funky disco nights. Benefits support Street Teens and the Nevada AIDS Project.

A bit off the strip, Flex (4371 W Charleston) is worth the trip for their cheap drinks, game room, weekend DJ dancing, male strippers and live music nights.FunHog Ranch is a men’s club for leather guys and bears. Darts, gaming, and pool and a down-home “be yourself” atmosphere. Cheap drinks attract early drinkers before they hit the dance clubs. Goodtimes is popular with a young hispanic cowboy crowd, has show nights and Papi dancers, open 24 hours, right next to the now closed Liberace Museum.

Of course, you don’t even have to leave your resort to find some pretty wonderful ways to pass the time, particularly in the people-watching department. Stroll through the lovely environs of the Encore, one of the plushest resorts in town, or wander down the Parisian-themed “alleyways” that snake through the Paris. Join the crowds oohing and aahing over the spectacular fountain at Bellagio, or admire the statuary and gleaming décor at the Palazzo. From rides to displays to about a million shopping opportunities, your resort is likely to keep you busy without even having to venture out onto the street—particularly since the hotels are definitely “mega” in size, and it can take you a half hour to walk from one end of your resort to the other..

For late night partying head to Piranha Nightclub, which offers an amazing view of The Strip, VIP cabanas and skyboxes. Porn stars and gogos show their stuff every Friday and Saturday night.

  • Book Hotels Early!

Vegas — unlike the rest of the world — is a destination where people book their hotel rooms and airplane ticket first. Today, most travelers decide on their destination first and then book the airfare, then the hotel, then the restaurant and the entertainment. On average visitors book their hotel in Las Vegas three months in advance. To get the lowest price, you must book early. Rates tend to go up as your date of arrival comes closer. Book Early!
